5 Reasons this is the Perfect Toyota 4Runner Roof Rack for your Roof Top Tent

The “CORPS 1804 Roof Rack” for your 4Runner. Learn more about Toyota 4Runner Roof Rack for Roof Top Tent.

If you are in the market for a Toyota 4Runner Roof Rack to keep that sweet rooftop tent (RTT) firmly attached to your truck for those high-flying adventures, keep reading because this rack has some compelling features that will make you look at other racks in a different light.

More Secure Mounting System

Have you seen how most RTTs (rooftop tents) are mounted to roof racks? Not particularly awe-inspiring. Each mounting point has two long bolts that drop down from one of the two channels running under the tent. One goes in front, and one goes behind a roof rack’s crossbar, whether it be tubular steel or extruded aluminum, then a metal plate with holes for the bolts to pass through comes up from the underside of the crossbar and clamps tight against it with nuts threaded onto the bolts up to the plate. So, in this design, the mounts just clamp around the crossbar but do not actually attach to them. However, the issue with this design is that if one of the nuts becomes loose, the strap becomes loose, and that mounting point no longer holds the tent to the car. You just lost 25 % of the entire mounting system’s strength. That’s not good.

Let’s now look at how the CORPS 1804 4Runner Roof Rack is designed differently than other racks but in a very familiar way. Our roof rack crossbars, or as we call them, crossframes, are designed with multiple slots and holes that work in the very conventional way of having two flat parts mate up to each other and holding them together with bolts that go through the holes. Our tech is over 100 years old and used throughout the Toyota 4Runner. With this system, each mounting point still uses two short bolts that drop down from the same channels under the tent, BUT they go through the rack and not around it. We have eliminated the metal strap that needs two nuts to keep it tight, and each nut can work individually. If one loosens, it does not affect the other, meaning you do not lose all the holding strength of that mount location.

We offer our “Dog Bone” RTT hardware kit to improve the process. This kit has shorter replacement bolts to get a socket wrench under it for solid fastening. The “Dog Bone” piece helps reinforce the rack in that area. A thin rubber pad also fits between the tent channels and the roof rack crossbar, i.e., crossframe, to protect each from getting scratched up. It also provides a little more bite to hold the tent in place.

Easy Access to Mounting Hardware

All the talk about secure mounting is pointless unless you can easily reach it during installation and when you do your occasional tightness check. (You are doing that, right?) In a quick, nonscientific survey of tents, we found several popular brands and models that are approx. 55 inches wide. Then we looked at the widths of the popular side rail racks with the extruded aluminum crossbars and found them to generally not be over 50”. This means that the Rooftop Tent will often overhang the roof rack. It is not a big deal that they overhang. The issue is that the rack's side rails block access to the mounting locations from the sides. The front fairing blocks access to the front mounting locations, but you can reach the rear ones from the back in most cases. I once asked an outfitter how they tighten the front mounting locations, and they said through the sunroof. I asked what if there is no sunroof and I got the response, “It’s a bit tricky”. I am used to hearing that about a particular section of trail when off-roading, not when installing gear in my driveway.

CORPS 1804 4Runner Roof Rack is designed with open sides, so you do not have this issue. You can see the mounting hardware when standing next to the truck, and it can easily be reached relative to other racks. Some of us may need a step stool to get up that high and go approximately 16 inches to the hardware.

You can still wash the roof

If you are one of my OCD compatriots in having things just right, you know this is a real thing. Do you see the image below? This popular overlanding YouTuber just removed his Rooftop Tent, and you can see the contrast between the clean sides of the vehicle and the dirty top. This is simply because the side rail-style roof racks block you from reaching in and cleaning the roof. I wonder if the Youtuber knows the sunroof trick? You might need some long arms to get all the way around.

Great Value

CORPS 1804 Roof Rack is comparable to other 3/4-length roof racks on the market, which don’t require drilling into the roof or using adhesive tape. However, it offers additional features that set it apart, all while being competitively priced among roof racks made in the USA.

Key features include:

  • Universal mounting hole patterns are used to add your favorite camp lights.

  • Beefy loops on the ends for securing hammocks or tying down gear.

  • Numerous attachment points for bungee cords, perfect for holding down cargo like lumber for home projects.

  • One-person installation, unlike the multi-person effort often needed for RTTs.

Whether you're gearing up for an overlanding trip or simply hauling supplies, the CORPS 1804 Roof Rack is a versatile and reliable choice for your 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner.

Easily add an Awning

Because our 4Runner Roof Racks are about 55 inches wide and have no side plates, we can easily add an awning before or after adding a rooftop tent. In addition, our “Swiss Awning Brackets” can be mounted in several ways to get the right fit for most sub-70-pound awnings. One thing we are able to do is flip our bracket to point up and have the awning mount not under the tent but next to it, a feature loved by taller people who get tired of ducking under low awnings or having the awning constantly dragging on their heads.
